Report on Extraction of Canadian Horticultural Peat as of August 31, 2026
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, September 17, 2026 – The Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA), representing 90% of North America's annual horticultural Peat extraction, releases its annual Peat Extraction Report for the 2026 season.
Summary
The annual survey of members was conducted on the status of their 2026 actual extraction as a percentage of their 2026 expected extraction as of August 31. See definitions foot note. Extraction will continue in most regions, weather dependent.
Overall, the 2026 results show that some regions were under their expected levels due to the challenges of rainy weather throughout the season. While the rainy weather may have impacted extraction levels, careful management of inventory should allow producers to meet all their partners needs.
Regional Extraction Results
Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba:
Manitoba reached 79% and Saskatchewan reached 90% of expected extraction levels, while Alberta reached 56%. It was a slower start to the extraction season in the West due to rainy conditions, especially in Alberta where it was one of the worst rainy seasons in recent years.
Québec and Ontario:
Québec's North Shore and South Shore each reached 77% of expectations, while Ontario reached 90%.
Atlantic Provinces:
New Brunswick's North region reached 85% and South region reached 70% of expectations. Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia were significantly below expected extraction levels. It was a late start to the season with challenging weather across the Atlantic provinces with rain keeping extraction level below the expected amounts.
