SCS' Veriflora® Responsibly Managed Peatlands program is an internationally recognized certification that ensures Peat moss production aligns with sustainable land management practices. Through third-party verification, this program demonstrates a commitment to preserving peatland ecosystems, promoting biodiversity, and supporting healthy communities. The certification ensures that Peat extraction and processing follow best management practices (BMPs) designed to minimize environmental impacts, protect local wildlife, and foster long-term ecological restoration.
The primary goals of the certification are to:
- Promote the adoption of best management practices (BMPs) that protect peatland ecosystems, minimize carbon emissions, and ensure long-term sustainability in Peat production.
- Foster continuous improvement in the restoration of peatlands to improve biodiversity, water quality, and carbon sequestration.
- Provide clear and measurable standards for evaluating responsible peatland management, ensuring practices are aligned with ecological, social, and economic sustainability.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of workers by promoting healthy working conditions and providing necessary health and safety protocols.
- Educate consumers about the environmental and social benefits of responsibly sourced Peat, encouraging purchasing decisions that support sustainable peatland management.
Certified Canadian Horticultural Peat Production
As of 2025, approximately 80% of total Canadian Peat extracted in any given year is certified under the Veriflora® Program. Non-certified producers may also apply best practices above the ones required by regulations, but may not have the means to initiate and maintain the certification process.
